A closer look at the science
In an eight-week randomized trial involving 47 adults with low activity levels and at least one cardiovascular risk factor, exercise followed by Finnish sauna produced greater improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and systolic blood pressure than exercise alone. That is a useful early signal from a small, specific study—not a promised result for every user or sauna. A 2025 review across several passive-heating methods found no clear pooled benefit for most markers, although some whole-body heating studies suggested possible blood-pressure improvements.
A crossover trial in 16 male basketball players found less next-morning soreness and better recovery of jumping performance after infrared sauna than after passive rest. Broader reviews find inconsistent results, and a 2025 meta-analysis concluded that improvements in endurance performance remain uncertain. Sauna can be an enjoyable recovery ritual without replacing the fundamentals of training and rest.
A global survey of 482 sauna users recorded perceived wellbeing and sleep benefits. Because participants reported their own experiences and the study did not randomly assign sauna use, it cannot establish cause and effect. A relaxing routine may be valuable in its own right; better sleep is a possibility, not a guarantee.
